Manual Install of Crashplan on Synology

[tested on CrashPlan 4.8.2, revised for clarity by the admin – thanks for submitting this in!]

I wanted to update to 4.8.2. Autoupdate was working, so I attempted this method: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/crashplan-4-8-2.53953/
cpio was giving me a few errors when I ran

$ cpio -idv < CrashPlan_4.8.2.cpi
cpio: Malformed number
cpio: warning: skipped 3266 bytes of junk
cpio: warning: archive header has reverse byte-order
cpio: premature end of file

So here’s what I did:

  1. Extract CrashPlan_4.8.2_Linux.tgz on Windows with 7zip.
  2. Open up 7zip File Manager (the integrated right-click commands don’t work)
  3. In 7zip file manager, browse to the folder containing CrashPlan_4.8.2.cpi, double-click to open
  4. Double-click on CrashPlan_4.8.2 to open that folder.
  5. Copy all of the files out of here to a folder called “crashplan-install” (you probably just need the lib* files and the /lib folder, but I’m not super skilled with linux so I’m not sure, and it won’t hurt).
  6. Copy the crashplan-install folder to your Synology box. I copied mine to /volume1/@appstore/CrashPlan/`
  7. Follow the rest of the instructions below.

I’ll paste the rest of instruction below in case the above link gets taken down:

$ cd /volume1/@appstore/CrashPlan/
$ wget --no-check-certificate https://download2.code42.com/installs/linux/install/CrashPlan/CrashPlan_4.8.2_Linux.tgz
$ tar -xf CrashPlan_4.8.2_Linux.tgz
$ cd crashplan-install
$ cpio -idv < CrashPlan_4.8.2.cpi
$ service crashplan stop
$ cd ..
$ rm -r lib*
$ cp -r crashplan-install/lib* .
$ service crashplan start
$ exit
